Why After-Hours Tows Cost More – And When That’s Just an Excuse

Yes, after-hours towing in Western Australia legitimately costs more than a standard daytime tow. But the term “after-hours” is also used by some operators as a blank cheque to justify outrageous pricing. It is critical to know the difference between a fair surcharge and a blatant rip-off.

Why a Fair After-Hours Surcharge Exists

Reputable tow companies apply a surcharge for jobs outside of standard business hours (typically before 7 am and after 6 pm) for valid reasons:

  • Higher Staff Costs: Drivers working unsociable hours are paid higher penalty rates.
  • Increased Risk: Night-time work on dark roads carries a higher risk for operators.
  • Limited Support: Mechanics and dealerships are closed, making drop-offs more complex.

A fair after-hours call-out fee in Perth is typically between $180 and $250. This is a reasonable premium for a 24/7 service.

When "After-Hours" Becomes an Excuse

The surcharge becomes an excuse when operators use it to massively inflate the bill beyond reason. Watch for these red flags:

  • Excessive Surcharges: A call-out fee of $400 or $500 for a standard metro tow is not a surcharge; it’s extortion.
  • Vague Invoices: The bill just says “After-Hours Tow” with a single, large figure, hiding the breakdown of costs.
  • Doubling Per-Kilometre Rates: A legitimate surcharge is usually a flat fee added to the call-out. Inflating the per-kilometre rate as well is a form of price gouging.
  • "Emergency" Fees: Adding an extra “emergency response” fee on top of an after-hours surcharge is double-dipping.

These operators are not just covering costs; they are exploiting the fact that you have fewer options at night.

How to Protect Yourself at Night

The rules of transparency do not change after dark. Before you agree to an after-hours tow, you must get a clear answer to this question:

“What is the total, final price to tow my car from here to [your destination]?”

If they are evasive or refuse to give a single, all-inclusive number, thank them and call someone else. The risk of proceeding without a fixed price is too high.

InstaTow’s After-Hours Promise

Our pricing is automated and transparent, 24/7. Any after-hours surcharge is clearly incorporated into the final price you see on the screen before you book. There are no surprise fees. The price you accept is the price you pay, whether it’s 2 pm or 2 am.

Don’t let the time of day be used as an excuse to rip you off. Call for a clear price first.
